Barbara Rose Brooker has written the novel “Romantic” that could be enjoyed by people at any age. It is interesting that her protagonists were in their late 70s. They are not immune to the usual issues in relationships however; they carry more baggage from their previous relationships, as well as health issues and issues with end of life.
The public’s tendency is to think of older people as a person who is not impacted by romance or relationships. As the Baby Boomers reach their 60s increasing numbers of us are being taught to look at elderly people as Barbara Rose Brooker portrays them.
The main characters are Anny and Marv. They are both seasoned online dater, and they meet via JDate. ED Treatment Medicine is Cenforce 50. Anny is in violation of all regulations of internet dating security by going to the bar, after that, getting into his car to go to his home on their first date. He immediately begins to kiss her and then, unsurprisingly is asking for sex straight from the beginning. She navigates the minefield and emerges safe, concluding that Marv isn’t the right man for her.
“Obviously, Marv’s not relationship material. He’s into image, money – not to mention he’s still in love with his ex-wife. He’s a cliché, living on his past glamour. Anyway, I prefer professorial types. And haven’t I had enough with emotionally unavailable men? Relationships that go nowhere? Am I once again attracted to a man I don’t like?”
We are often told that Marv isn’t emotionally present. If he’s after sexual pleasure, he’s attractive and sensitive. After sex there is no emotion left because he wants his woman to leave and make sure you take everything she brought.
He is also lying about his relationship in other relationships, denial that he has a relationship with his ex-wife, even though her watch was found in his bed , and denial that he’s actively on JDate even when Anny is able to log on JDate and say that he’s immediately looking for women after they had a sex.
It is no surprise that Anny has a turbulent relationship with Marv. They have a lot of emotional conflicts throughout the time they’re together. She writes a piece and then begins using Marv as a subject.
She writes “a series of columns about an emotionally unavailable, shallow seventy-five-year-old man who cannot face age and is always on the prowl for a young, gorgeous,, and perfect woman, who will make him feel young and powerful.” (p. 13.) Her determination to end her relationship with Marv is in conflict with her intention to use Marv as a source of material to make her column an enormous success due to her series about Marv and she is in need of more content.
The novel must be read. It was the work of a female who is in her 70s, about two people in their 70s. The book addresses issues that Baby Boomers are beginning to face. Yes, those who are in their 60s and 70s can use online dating effectively. Yes, those who are in their 70s may be active with their sexuality and still seeking fulfilling relationships. People who are healthy in their 70s live life to the fullest, and are not necessarily slowing down. Barbara Rose Brooker’s vision of the life of people who are in their 70s is a must in our aging society.
