Rising Prevalence of Acne Steering Scar Treatment Product Demand in U.S.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) estimates that acne affects up to 50 million Americans each year. As per the AAD, nearly 85% of the Americans between the ages of 12 and 24 years are affected by, at least, minor acne. This dermatological condition usually starts during puberty, and it may continue into an individual’s 30s or 40s. Acne, which is the most-common skin condition in the U.S., occurs due to the clogging of the hair follicles by dirt, dead skin cells, and sebum.

Thus, the rising incidence of acne will drive the U.S. scar treatment market at a healthy CAGR of 10.4% during the forecast period (2018–2023). Additionally, the soaring number of surgeries for the improvement of physical appearance and booming healthcare expenditure will aid the market revenue in surging from $6.3 billion in 2017 to $11.3 billion by 2023. For instance, the 2020 National Plastic Surgery Statistics reveal that 193,073 breast augmentation surgeries, 325,112 eyelid surgeries, 234,374 facelift surgeries, and 6,878,486 reconstructive surgeries were performed in the U.S. in 2020.

The type segment of the U.S. scar treatment market is classified into topical, laser, surface, injectable, and surgical. Among these, the topical category accounted for the largest market share in 2017 due to the increasing use of creams, gels, oils, and gel sheets for scar treatment in the country. Currently, the U.S. populace is showing a high preference for silicone gels as they prevent scar formation in freshly healed wounds and minimize prominent immature scars.

Apart from keloid and hypertrophic scars, all such products are used to treat acne scars, stretch marks, contracture scars, and post-surgical scars. In the preceding years, the highest volume of such products was used to treat post-surgical scars owing to the rising number of surgeries in the country. However, in the foreseeable future, the consumption of these products will increase at the highest rate for the treatment of keloid and hypertonic scars due to the growing incidence of burn cases and chronic wounds and soaring volume of surgeries in the U.S.

The end user segment of the U.S. scar treatment market is categorized into hospitals, home-use, dermatological clinics, and others. According to P&S Intelligence, the home-use category generated the highest revenue in 2017. This was due to the escalating personal care expenditure, owing to the rising disposable income of people, and increasing usage of topical products, such as gels, oils, and creams, on account of their enhancing efficiency and plunging costs, in the country.

Therefore, the surging prevalence of acne and rising volume of surgical procedures will accelerate the adoption of scar treatment products in the U.S.
